Living in Portugal - February 2024

Another great month for us, with a few travel days to the North of Portugal, a few days of rain and cooler weather in the Algarve, and just enough sunshine mixed in to keep us going through the winter. We really need the rain and it has been a welcome change this year to see so much in January and February. We're also a bit jaded to insinuate a tough winter here when average winter daytime temperatures are in the mid 60's.

As March rolls around you can feel the Algarve coming back to full life. The beach concessions begin setting up and opening for business, the few beach restaurants that closed for their holiday are re-opening, and of course the number of sunny days begin to far outnumber the cloudy ones.

Activity in the gardens this month; The gardens seem to love the mix of weather. It feels like spring has begun in late February here with all the wildflowers in bloom, the fig, and almond trees blooming and sprouting new leaves, the favas are getting tall, flowering and starting to show small pods, and the citrus trees beginning to flower although the winter fruit still remains on most of them. Teresa and Luis are planting potatoes, peas, zucchini, and bell peppers, while the herbs seem to be unstoppable here the parsley, sage, lavender, thyme, and chives are growing year round and spreading throughout the gardens.

A fantastic breakfast & hike with our Friends Scott & Sarah. Great views walking along the cliffs above Benagil Caves

Random Scenes around Portimao and Estombar

Horses are frequently used for weed control in rural areas around us. You'll often find one or two tied to a post in the middle of a field given just enough slack on their rope to mow down the selected area.

Mary joined our friend Gloria on a 10k hike with the Algarve Hiking group. The hike was on the San Vicente coast at Monte Clerigos on a beautiful February day.

Wine Dinner with the Wine Mine Club at Veneza Restaurante and Garrafeira. Our Friends Peter & Elena joined us for this one

Jazz nas Adegas (Jazz in the wine cellars) with Friends Ken & Jen and their visitors from Cleveland. This months event was held at Cabrita wines with entertainment by a quartet from the Silves Philharmonic

Another sunny day for a walk along the Alvor boardwalk at low tide. Several locals out digging for clams in the newly exposed sand

Barney and Sonny living the dream in the Algarve. They have fun with the neighborhood cats who love to visit them on the other side of the glass.

As always we hope everyone is doing well, healthy, happy, and thriving. We miss you and love you all...A lot!
